Healthy Discussion: Why Your Dentist Asks About More Than Your Teeth

Your dentist doesn’t just want what’s best for your oral health – they want to see that you’re in good overall health as well. Though they’re not your general physician, there are certain things that will help them give you the best possible treatment. Here are some factors to let your dentist know about at your next checkup.

New Medications

Your dentist should know all the medications you’re currently on – not to pry into your personal life, but instead, to be aware of medicine that may affect your oral health.

Dry mouth is the most common side effect of medications that dentists look for. Saliva helps wash away food particles and neutralizes acids that erode tooth enamel. Without saliva doing its job, you’re more susceptible to tooth decay, gum disease, and other oral issues.

High Blood Pressure

High blood pressure can produce complications in your treatment. You may be coming up on a procedure that requires the use of local anesthetics, which could be dangerous for someone with hypertension (high blood pressure). Your dentist may need to modify your treatment plan to minimize risks, such as postponing certain procedures or using alternative techniques.

Diabetes

Diabetes is a very common disease that can cause problems throughout the body, including the eyes, heart, feet, and immune system. It can affect your oral health, too – periodontal (gum) disease often develops in diabetic patients. Even if you control your diabetes, it can’t hurt to let the dentist know so that you get the right, safe treatment.

Digestive Issues

Gut health and oral health are related – one affects the other. Harmful bacteria can make its way into the digestive tract, and misalignment, infection, and missing teeth can affect your ability to chew food, creating possible digestive issues down the road. Letting your dentist know you have problems with digestion can better inform them when it comes to planning your treatment.

If you want the best treatment you can get, keep your dentist in the loop about these health factors at your next checkup! Maintaining your dental health can support your overall health as well.
