If you’re ready to correct misaligned teeth or a bad bite, Invisalign is a discreet solution to give you a straight smile. You don’t have to worry about any brackets or wires because clear aligners are worn over your teeth to move them. It’s a convenient and effective method to fix a variety of alignment problems; however, certain mistakes can add delays to your treatment. Here are the do’s and don’ts of Invisalign to keep your treatment on track.
The Do’s of Wearing Invisalign
Your dentist will give you a series of aligners to move your teeth in small increments. Although every case differs, most patients are finished with their treatment in about 12 months. Here’s how you can ensure there aren’t any complications along the way:
- Wear Your Aligners for 22 Hours Per Day: Your aligners will apply continual pressure to your teeth to move them slowly. You must commit to wearing them for at least 22 hours per day or your teeth may not move as predicted. It can also make your treatment painful. Generally, you should only remove them when eating, drinking, and brushing and flossing.
- Change Your Aligners on Time: Your dentist will instruct you to change your aligners every 1 to 2 weeks, depending on your treatment plan. Switching your aligners too soon can move your teeth too quickly, causing discomfort and other complications. Not switching your aligners on time will delay your treatment.
- Clean Your Aligners Every Day: You must keep your aligners clean to keep your teeth and gums healthy. Good oral hygiene also keeps your aligners looking their best for a nearly invisible treatment. Clean your aligners using a soft-bristled toothbrush and a mild hand soap or dishwashing liquid after eating, in the morning, and before going to bed.
- Soak Your Aligners Daily: Use an aligner soaking solution daily to kill any bacteria missed by brushing.
- Take Them Out When Eating: You don’t have any dietary restrictions when choosing Invisalign, but you must remove them when eating or drinking anything except water.
The Don’ts of Invisalign
Besides complying with your treatment plan, there are a few things you should avoid:
- Don’t Forget Your Storage Case: Carry your storage case with you, so you have a safe, clean place to keep your aligners when they aren’t in your mouth.
- Don’t Use Harmful Cleaning Products: Never use bleach or other harmful chemicals on your aligners.
- Don’t Expose Your Aligners to Hot Temperatures: Don’t expose your aligners to hot temperatures to prevent warping.
- Don’t Skip Your Appointments: Check in with your dentist every few weeks so they can monitor the progression of your treatment.
With a few simple changes for the next year, you can reach your goals without any bumps in the road. You’ll have a healthy, straight smile to be proud of.
