How to Handle a Lost Dental Filling

Dental fillings are a way to repair a tooth that has been damaged by decay. The dentist will remove the decayed part of the tooth and then fill the hole with a material that will restore it to its original shape and function. If you have lost or broken a dental filling, it’s important to take steps to protect your tooth from further harm. Here are seven steps you should take if this ever happens to you.

Step #1: Call Your Dentist

If you lost or broke a dental filling, contact your dentist right away and describe what happened. While you wait for your appointment to have the tooth fixed, ask them for advice on how to protect it. Inform your dentist about any pain you’re experiencing so they can try to see you sooner or recommend pain relief options.

Additionally, if it’s after hours when the filling comes out, listen to their voicemail. It may tell you what to do until their office is open again.

Step #2: Hold on to the Filling

Keep the filling safe until you see your dentist. They will determine if it can be reused or if a new one will need to be custom-made. Keep it in a clean, safe container, like a plastic bag.

Step #3: Rinse with Salt Water

Rinse your mouth with warm salt water to clean the damaged tooth and kill bacteria. This will also help soothe the tooth if you are experiencing any discomfort or pain. You should add 1/2 a teaspoon of salt to a cup of warm water and gently swish it around your mouth before spitting it into the sink.

Step #4: Chew Carefully

Chew on the other side of your mouth from where the dental filling came out until you can get your filling replaced. This will help avoid additional sensitivity or irritation.

Step #5: Consider a Temporary Fix

There may be sharp pieces poking out from the tooth. These can scratch your tongue, lips, or cheeks. You can use dental wax or temporary filling material to cover the damaged tooth until you see your dentist. This will help lessen sensitivity, therefore making it easier to eat, drink, and clean your teeth.

Step #6: Take Pain Medicine

You can use over-the-counter medications, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen, to relieve any sensitivity you’re experiencing. Along with following the dosage instructions, check with your dentist first if you’re planning on taking something new.

You can also use topical numbing agents, such as Orajel or Anbesol, to temporarily relieve discomfort. To lessen swelling, apply an ice pack or a cold compress to the area of the face where the damaged tooth is located for 15 minutes at a time.

Step #7: Brush Carefully

Brush and floss your teeth as usual, but be gentler with the tooth that lost the filling. This will help remove any food particles that may be stuck to prevent further damage.
