What Is Bruxism?
Bruxism is the term that refers to the habit of grinding teeth. Most of the time, this occurs while a person is asleep. In fact, many patients may have bruxism and not realize it because they are unconscious at the time. However, Dr. Barnett can tell when teeth appear to be worn down, cracking, or even breaking. Other signs of bruxism include the following:
- Flat or chipped teeth
- Tooth sensitivity
- Stiff or tight jaw muscles
- Jaw pain
- Neck, head or facial pain
- Headaches that start around the temple area
- Disrupted sleep
Treatment with Nightguards
How can you control something you do while you sleep? After Dr Barnett has diagnosed your bruxism, treatment is actually quite simple. We’ll provide an oral appliance that you wear at night. This nightguard keeps your upper and lower teeth from touching and harming each other. To create this appliance, we’ll take impressions of your teeth with our digital scanner, which is much more comfortable and efficient than traditional impressions. Then, our dental lab will fabricate your custom appliance and send it back to us for you to use.
Benefits of a Custom Nightguard
You may have seen nightguards for sale at your local drugstore and wonder if this product would be “good enough” to protect your teeth. These store-bought nightguards may come at a lower price, but they don’t last very long. On the other hand, our custom, durable nightguards can be useful for years before needing replacement, if they are well maintained. Over time, this small appliance can spare your teeth from unnecessary stress and damage, allowing you to enjoy your natural, strong smiles for many years to come!
