Why Are Regular Dental Checkups & Cleanings Important?

Routine dental visits are crucial, so much so that you should attend them (at least) every six months. Going without them would put your smile in grave danger.
First of all, these visits help you avoid major oral health conditions. Because they remove your grin’s built-up plaque and tartar, they make cavities, gum disease, and worse issues much less likely. That means skipping a dental checkup (and cleaning) could ruin your mouth’s health. As plaque further spreads over your teeth and gums, you’ll suffer dental emergencies and other bodily ailments.
Similarly, dental checkups save you time and money in the long term. These visits only take an hour each and allow full coverage from dental insurance, so skipping them isn’t wise. Doing so would just result in a costly and time-consuming procedure later – perhaps a root canal, tooth extraction, etc.
What to Expect During a Dental Checkup

You should expect the following from a checkup at our office:
- An Oral Exam – We start each checkup with an oral exam, which assesses your teeth, bite, and prior dental work. This examination also screens you for potential signs of oral cancer.
- Dental X-rays – At least once a year, a checkup will take dental X-rays to see if you have issues below the surface.
- Medical History Review – Dr. Barnett will update your patient history at each checkup. That way, she’ll know if any medicines you take affect your oral health.
- Treatment Plan(s) – We’ll draft a custom treatment plan if a checkup spots any issues with your smile. From there, Dr. Barnett will explain her suggestions step by step.
- A Q&A Period – Toward the end of your checkup, you can ask Dr. Barnett questions about your care and oral health.
What to Expect During a Dental Cleaning

We clean your teeth after each checkup, as brushing and flossing can’t protect your whole mouth. These cleanings include:
- Plaque Removal – Our hygienist will use specialized instruments to remove the plaque (and tartar) between your teeth and along your gums.
- Slight Flossing – We’ll floss between your teeth as part of the cleaning. That way, we can remove the plaque we may have missed earlier.
- Teeth Polishing – After the primary cleaning, we’ll polish your teeth to remove minor stains from your smile. You’ll then sport a grin that’s brighter than before!
- Use of Fluoride – Dr. Barnett may apply fluoridated gel at the end of your teeth cleaning. Notably, this gel strengthens enamel and protects it from decay and cavities.
